BIO

Valentin Capony was born in Lyon in 1990. In 2008, he began his studies at the École Supérieure d’Art et de Design de Saint-Étienne in France, where he graduated with a DNAP (Diploma in Fine Arts) in 2011. In 2012, he went to China for a bilateral exchange program to study at the Great School of Fine Arts in Nanjing. This exchange allowed him, among other things, to begin his exploration of Chinese engraving and painting. In 2013, he resumed his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, specializing in engraving, where he earned his Master’s degree (Master 2).
His artistic work is now primarily focused on engraving and performance. He has been awarded several artist residencies, including at URDLA (2016), Academia Belgica (2016), the Carrefour des Arts Foundation (2017-2018), and the Félicien Rops Foundation (2024). His work also received the first prize at the Young European Engraving competition, KOMASK in Antwerp (2017). He primarily exhibits and works in France and Belgium, but his work is also presented internationally, such as in Canada at the Biennale of Contemporary Printmaking (2017-2025), in Romania at the Cosman Foundation (2025), and in China in Shenzhen (2023).
His research, which intersects engraving, performance, and recording, has led him to develop numerous partnerships with art schools. These partnerships take the form of workshops, where he collaborates with students on exploring the dynamics of dialogue within creation through FM waves (2017-2024). He is also regularly called upon to substitute at the engraving workshops of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Brussels and Liège (2023-2025).
